Sonja Seferović, “ The Exhibition of Anabel Zanze” (Dubrovački vjesnik, Dubrovnik 1998, printed in Croatian, translation: Graham McMaster)

(…) With this presentation the artist has evinced her interest in collage and, through the materials used (newspaper sheets, computer typesetting), composition and metaphor with minimal graphic interventions in the separate exhibits, has transmitted an original and suggestive visual idea about urbanity.

The point of departure being a black square located eccentrically in the picture, as element, or basis, urban planning matrix in the fabric of the city, she has embodied her creative thinking, completed it via collages as big as sheets, densely filled in with letter-characters in the dominant grey that, vis-a-vis the square, creates a counterpoint, an urban structure, as well as a metaphor, for the imposing city walls. In some unique complex of an atypical collage with a reduction of the purposeful and by strictly controlled intervention with artist’s ink, by sequencing and by her own inscription of a calligraphy of letters, like a miniaturist, Anabel Zanze has in this exhibition created a visual achievement that is interesting not only for its investigative but also, very much so, for its creative quality.
