My B1 format collages are an echo of the real world, of urban, industrialised society. Sometimes there are details of buildings, of city walls, sometimes there are ground plans of whole megalopolises, and sometimes they are abstractions. Playing with black and white fields smaller and larger squares, I seek my perfect form for just it: for “my”square.
When newsprint is recycled, that contemporary material used and often abused for mass purposes becomes my artistic substance, and as well as aiming critically at certain aspects of society and social life, I am also directing irony at myself – not even one’s own work can avoid the consumer system and the appropriate fate.
Why newsprint? Paper is a consumable substance, newspapers are consumable goods, and an artistic picture is a possible object of social idolatry and prestige. By using newsprint as means in the making of a work of art and text as painting, I want to record the dichotomous nature of the system.
