I do these “Studies” in small formats and with means that enable me to work at greater speed; innovative ideas appear in them more spontaneously and any disposition to try out versions and put in different changes of a linguistic, drawing or painting nature can be spotted more easily. When I paint in bigger sizes and when I use oil paints, everything is done more slowly and in a sense at a greater distance. I would describe the difference between the making of the studies and the paintings like the difference between writing out text on paper and carving text in stone.
I live in the illusion that my studies give me time (which passes by so quickly) and that the big paintings simply devour it.
