Trône et Débacle

oil on canvas
90 × 110 cm

The painting “Trône et Débâcle”, or “Throne and Downfall” puts two apparently contradictory concepts into a relation of dependency, for they are, looked at historically and symbolically, very much connected.
The figure is composed of two almost equal parts and is like a chair or throne. The left-hand part, the white throne with backrest, suggest the achievement of success, the fulfilment of ambitions, attainment of high positions and power. The right hand or black part of the picture, with the overturned throne, suggests lost power and presents as abyss or downfall.
