Igor Fisković, [Untitled] (typescript, Orebić 1999, translation: Graham McMaster)

(…) Anabel Zanze shows us her interest in collage, that distinctive pictorial technique that takes clippings from various materials, very often, as here, from ordinary newspapers, and arranges them in extremely delicate relations from which stem new and certainly not at all ordinary visual effects. They are constructed in an equilibrium of subtle views on substances and of the powerful feelings of their system in the squares shown here, which take on the meaning of a microcosm in accordance with the macro-situations of life on earth. Supplementing this inspiration with excerpts from the computer typeface, which provides entirely new possibilities of expression, she confirms her interests in graphic excellence that she brings to life in the works on show or supplements with very reduced colourist interventions. At base, then, she is interested in composition with a sensed wish for expression of a vision of the city, of we might say a Mediterranean ambiance, arranged according to the model of her native Dubrovnik. And so her geometry with dense letters of the surfaces filled in is not strictly constrained by rules defined a priori, but becomes serious and yet playful by turns, seeking in its own, even if sparse, changes, sensations of light and dark. Like those that are daily born in pure relations of structures crammed like the old walls and the blue sky that is aroused from time to time. The creative act in these concordances is confirmed in those works in which she herself, assiduously and attentively like the scribes of old, writes out text in tones of grey on pure white backgrounds. And so she extends the artistic game with time and space from seemingly very simple reflections that are nevertheless content-rich and so enabling us to encounter the subtleties of her perception of an apparently different world.
