In the “Grisailles” series in some of the paintings I apply the graphic procedures of polishing and erasing colours and so on. Wanting to preserve the visually self-sufficient grounds so created, I give up on the writing of a “wall” of letters, and decided to apply a single word or phrase: “seminatio”,récolte”,pepeljasto tlo”[ashy ground],tableau gris”…Such grey paintings, apart from their visual sensations, also have a marked semantic component, that can be read polyvalently: both literally and in some figurative sense (allegorically, symbolically, metaphorically, religiously and anthropologically, for instance).

In some of the paintings of the cycle, citations are written out that interpret the term “grisaille”(a monochrome grey), while in some others “the grey” is indicated by the selection of colour or the name of the work.

Grisaille, a French word, is expressed as “grey picture” in Croatian. We have no noun for a picture painted in shades of grey. Since my painting has some of its roots in analytical art, which considers the language, the name of the exhibition or cycle, I stress the fact that for some foreign words we do not have translations and so, as in this case, we have to resort to rather awkward descriptive solutions.
